Bagpipe Master Class w/Richard Kean
1:30-3:00pm
This class is open to players of all levels. Richard will cover bagpipe mechanics, maintenance, construction, how the instrument
works , how a reed works as well as any other topics students may want to cover.
A bit about Richard Kean...
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Richard Kean has been piping since age "very wee." During his childhood Richard studied with several prominent pipers, Even McRae, Alan McDonald, and Rene Cuson to name a few. Richard's studies gave him an intimate knowledge of his instrument and lead to the development of an exciting catalog of contemporary music for the Highland Bagpipes and Scottish Smallpipes. His love of piping has taken him through some of the strangest places in North America and Europe playing in every venue imaginable. During his travels Richard has collected several different bagpipes and regularly does presentations of the various bagpipes of Europe. While in Scotland, Richard apprenticed with Nigel Richard of Garvie bagpipes as a bagpipe maker. Richard now makes bagpipes specializing in custom Highland Bagpipes and Medieval Great Pipes.
Richard has performed with the world champion Hamilton Pipe Band, Poor Man's Fortune, Jiggernaut, Stockbridge Pipe Band, & Medicine Hat Pipe Band. He currently performs with Teribus, Needfire, and Jiggernaut.
