Classes

Gaiananda Ensemble 2008 photo by: Kevin Hartnell

A sacred fusion of music, movement and camaraderie. Imagine dancing in a collective of women, offering unconditional support…. authentic, innate and emotive. The focus is on the group dynamics, the dancers intuitively flowing as one with the music, each having the opportunity to both lead and follow. It is a profound expression of rhythm, melody and connectedness transformed into movement and gratitude. Tribal Belly dance is about community and feminine strength and beauty… in all our diverse shapes, shades and sizes. This style is a fusion of North African, East Indian, Roma and Flamenco dances combined with Middle Eastern Belly dance techniques. All levels will incorporate Tribal fast and slow moves as well as the application of Odissi Choka Stepping for development of coordination and grace.

This class will build upon the concepts learned in previous classes and will focus on working in couples, formation changes and more complex combinations using the element of Fire, the Summer season and the South direction.

Tribal West (Water /Autumn): Sundays 2:15 - 3:15pm

This class will expand on how to dance more intuitively and to flow in and out of formations and connecting more deeply with the other dancers and the music using the element of water, the Autumn season and the knowledge of the West direction. You will learn how to intuit and dance to music you have never heard before, and how to interpret its changes of tempo and structure of movement, allowing the music to move you. We will also learn how to hold space for other dancers and to "solo" in a group, how to expand your energy field and how to honor and protect it.

Tribal North (Earth / Winter): Time and date TBA

Here we will introduce performance elements and how to draw your audience into your intimate experience in that moment of your dance. This class series will focus on deeper levels of tribal dance using the stabilizing force of the earth. This class will also concentrate on layering isolation techniques by incorporating all of the elements, seasons and directions. How to "dance" the flute and the drum, how to dance liquid, fire and air simultaneously.
